Why the 309 Punk House?

The 309 Punk House was selected as the flagship accessibility project in Arianna’s name because of it’s ties to her. Current Co-Director and founding member Christopher Satterwhite reached out to Trident Disabilities in the Spring of 2023 to express his condolences in the passing of Arianna Moore who was once a student of his. He had not realized that she passed and in conversations with us he shared an essay she wrote and explained how the work she did for him in class helped to set foundations for the eventual 309 Punk Project. So we thought what would be a better flagship project then two organizations profoundly impacted by Arianna Moore and two founders impacted by her memory daily to work together and create access for all in her name.

Why Did We Practically Choose 309?

Obviously there needs to be more to a project then just friendship, memories, and a passion from both teams. We had to decide whether a ramp was needed here and if this kind of money would be better spent elsewhere. The conclusion our team came to was multifaceted and practical for an organization of our size.

The first aspect we considered was if this ramp was needed and it certainly was, not only did 309 have members who struggled getting into the building already but they could not host most people with disabilities inside. They had tried to remedy this with some temporary ramp solutions but they hoped for something more ideal.

Then we considered how this project could help our community. We thought that 309 was perfect because they already had a great influence on the culture of Pensacola and this ramp could provide people with disabilities more options to get involved and impact their community in meaningful ways. The art of people with disabilities could be better appreciated and have a home with 309.

Finally, we had to ask ourselves is this the place that needs a ramp most and our honest answer is no. There are likely many other places who could use a ramp more but we realized with our size and connections this was the best place for us to show off our ability to make a change and to highlight Arianna Moore in a way many other places likely wouldn’t give the option to. We also thought that ranking need is a hard task because in reality everyone needs all places to be accessible. So we decided that 309 could practically help us to grow as an organization and impact more lives and more needs in the future. More importantly it would give us the most options to show off Arianna Moore in all her glory.

Arianna’s Essay

This essay was written by Arianna Moore in March 2018 which would have been her second semester at the University of West Florida. Arianna writes about three stereotypes that defined her existence before she even knew what they meant. When referring to her disability, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Arianna explains that she felt pride in her higher IQ where she states:

“I Took My Little Superpower and Ran With It.”

This was an essay Arianna wrote for Christopher Satterwhite’s class and when he sent it over we knew we needed to use it for her mural on the ramp. We picked the quote above because Arianna’s essay was all about assigning your own labels and picking your own little superpower and running with it. The point wasn’t that she felt smarter then anyone else but instead that she used this fact about her disability to get her through the times when she didn’t feel intelligent or capable. That was the key for Arianna, and we wanted to create a mural for other little girls or boys with disabilities to see and realize their little superpowers. Arianna wanted us to shed the stereotypes of disability and instead createa mural for everyone to see and find their own little superpowers and once again we realized Trident Disabilities still had more to learn from her example.

Ramp Example

This is just an example of work the construction company has completed before. Our ramp should look similar to this with wood railings and wood panneling ontop of the aluminum.

The Ramp Quote

This is the ramp quote we decided on $9,897.62 a larger price tag then we were expecting. The construction company agreed to help us by doing the labor for free as they loved the idea of the project and realized we were a very small non-profit. Even with their generosity we checked multiple local places and compared their quote to several large ramp companies. Most notably was EZ-Access one of the largest if not the largest distributer of aluminum ramps. The representative told us that they could not beat their price by much and that they would only send an aluminum ramp with no wood and we would have to hire someone to build it they wouldn’t do that part.

We informed this other contractor that we were going to compare quotes before asking people to donate to a project and he was completely open to it an encouraged it.

All of these factors combined made us realize that this was a fair price and that they were giving us a deal as the ramp would be aluminum but have wood paneling to help us install a mural and have it last longer.
